Important Reminders:
 

  • Monday is PJ day!  We will also be watching the movie Holes!
  • The End of the Year parties are this Thursday from 2-3.  We hope to see you there!  
  • Tuesday will be superhero day.  This event is being organized by all of the 5th grade classes across the district to help raise funds for Officer Crosby for a wheelchair accessible home.  Bring a $1 and you get to dress like a superhero.
  • This week we will be presenting Genius Hour projects and our Social Studies "plays".
  • Yearbooks will be sent home on Thursday.
  • Friday is our last day and it is a half day!
  • Just a reminder to take a look at the email sent last week regarding the last ten days of school.

May 15th-19th

Important Reminders:
 

  • Friday is Fun Day!  Please have your child wear sunscreen and tennis shoes!  We will be outside all morning.
  • Just a reminder to take a look at the email sent last week regarding the last ten days of school!

Writing: This week we will finish our autobiographies!  We are going to focus on writing about special memories, conclusions and we will revise/publish our work!

Reading:  During reading this week we will take time to read autobiographies and biographies in order to gain ideas for our writing!


Math: This week we will work in groups to create our own math board games!  We will use the skills and concepts we have learned throughout the year.

Social Studies: This week we will continue social studies chapter 4 on America's important documents.  Students will work in groups to tell the story of how either the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, or the Constitution were created.

Important Reminders:
 

  • Please remind your child to turn in their April reading log!
  • The Book Fair is today and tomorrow!  We are going today so students can check out what is available.  Feel free to send students with money tomorrow!  Just a reminder, it is "buy one, get one free" and there is tax!
  • Dr. Moehlmann will be emailing you if anything changes with being off school Friday and/or the end of the year dates.
Writing: This week we will continue our newest writing unit: Autobiographies!  This week we are going to focus on writing about our families, interests, and special memories.  

Reading:  During reading this week we will take time to read autobiographies and biographies in order to gain ideas for our writing!


Math: Our math test will now be Tuesday, May 9th.  We will be reviewing today.  On Wednesday and Thursday we will have a measurement scavenger hunt in our classroom!

Social Studies: This week we will begin social studies chapter 4: Community Government.  We will focus on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution this week.

May 1st-5th

Listed below are the important reminders and objectives for our week.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Thanks!

Important Reminders:
 

  • MAP testing is officially over!  Woohoo!  To celebrate "putting the MAP to bed" we are wearing our pajamas on Monday!
  • Please remind your child to turn in their April reading log!
  • On Tuesday we will be having Junior Achievement.  Volunteers from Panera will be coming to our classroom to teach us about consumers, producers, and money.  The Junior Achievement lesson will be from 9:00-2:15.  We will still have our normal block and lunch time.
  • While I love the idea of using a fidget toy to help with staying focused, there are a few of them that are "toys" and not being used in the correct way.  Yikes!  Concord has put a ban on the fidget spinners.  These are no longer allowed to come to school.  They are being used as "toys" and are causing a lot of distraction.  The other item that is creating a mess, is the slime.  NO more slime can come to school.  Let me know if you have any questions!
Writing: This week we will continue our newest writing unit: Autobiographies!  This week we are going to focus on writing about our families, interests, and special memories.  

Reading:  During reading this week we will take time to read autobiographies and biographies in order to gain ideas for our writing!


Math: We will will focus on partitioning shapes. Our test will be on Thursday, May 4th.  Study guides were sent home last week!


Science:  This week we will continue Chapter 9: Energy.  We will review on Monday and our test will be on Tuesday!  Study guides were sent home last week.

  • Thank you to everyone who brought in an item for our MAP testing trail mix!  We are going to have some great "brain food" this week!  The class is so excited!
  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.  
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)
  • Thursday morning we will begin the math section of MAP testing at 9 am.  Please make sure your child arrives to school on time!
Writing: This week we will begin a new writing unit: Autobiographies!  We are going to begin writing about important events, family members, pets, etc. in our lives that would be beneficial to include in an autobiography.

Reading:  This week we will take time to read autobiographies and biographies in order to gain ideas for our writing!

Math: We will will focus on quadrilaterals and partitioning shapes. Our test will be on Thursday, May 4th.  Study guides will be sent home this week!

Science:  This week we will continue Chapter 9: Energy.  We will talk about how shadows are formed and heat energy including conductors and insulators.  Study guides will be sent home this week!

April 17th-21st

  • Thank you to everyone who brought in an item for our MAP testing trail mix!  We are going to have some great "brain food" this week!  The class is so excited!
  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.  
    • April 17th-19th (in the afternoon)
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)
  • Monday afternoon we will begin MAP testing!  I am so proud of all of the hard work our class has put in o preparing for this test!  We have been working hard all year long and I know they are ready to show what they know!


Due to MAP testing this week, we will not be having our normal instruction time in reading, writing, and social studies.  However, we will continue to work on our geometry unit.  We will will focus on quadrilaterals and partitioning shapes.  We will wait to have the geometry test until after MAP testing is over!

Important Reminders:
  • Please remind your child to turn in their March reading log!
  • Scholastic book orders are due this Thursday!
  • A couple weeks ago I sent an email regarding a MAP snack that our class will be having throughout our MAP testing weeks.  If you could, please send in some type of snack that we can mix together to create a "trail mix".  The email also talked about sending in a letter of encouragement for me to give to your child the day we start testing.  Please send those items in sometime this week.  Thanks in advance!

  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.  
    • April 17th-19th (in the afternoon)
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)

Weekly Objectives:

Writing:  For the next few weeks, we will be spending time reviewing for the upcoming MAP test!  This week we will focus on reviewing the different elements of our writing that we have learned this year.  This will include reviewing introductions, conclusions, transitions, and addressing the audience. 

Reading: During reader's workshop we will also be working on reviewing key concepts that we have learned this year!  This week we will focus on the importance of understanding theme and the viewpoint of multiple characters in a story.

Math: This week we will begin CHapter 14: Geometry.  We will be focusing on angles, polygons, triangles, and quadrilaterals.

Science: This week we will continue Chapter 8: Matter.  We will focus on the ways we can measure volume and mass.  Our test for this chapter will be this Thursday!

*In order to cover all of the important math chapters before the MAP test, for the next few weeks spelling will be put on hold.  We are going to take our normal spelling time to do some extra math work.  This week we will review perimeter and area to make sure we fully understand this important concept!

  • Please remind your child to turn in their March reading log!
  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.  
    • April 17th-19th (in the afternoon)
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)

Weekly Objectives:

*In order to cover all of the important math chapters before the MAP test, for the next few weeks spelling will be put on hold.  We are going to take our normal spelling time to do some extra math work.  This week we will take all that we have learned about graphing and put this to use in a graphing project.  Students will choose a question and survey the class.  They will then create a poster that displays the results using each graph we have learned!

Important Reminders:
  • The deadline to order the 2016-17 Concord ALL COLOR Yearbook is March 31.  To order now, CLICK HERE or return the yearbook order envelope you received with a check for $15 made out to Concord PTG.
  • This Tuesday night is the Concord Expo!  Stop by our hallway to check out projects our class will have on display!
  • MAP Testing Dates:  Our class will be MAP testing on the following dates and times, please try to avoid scheduling appointments during these times.  
    • April 17th-19th (in the afternoon)
    • April 27th-28th (in the morning)

Weekly Objectives:

Writing:  For the next few weeks, we will be spending time reviewing for the upcoming MAP test!  This week we will focus on reviewing our narrative writing unit.  We will focus on the aspects of a narrative and the elements that are involved in writing a small moment story.  We will also practice typing our narratives in order to prepare for typing during testing.


Reading: During reader's workshop we will also be working on reviewing key concepts that we have learned this year!  This week we will focus on the importance of understanding the main idea.  We will also discuss the plot of a story.  

Math: This week we will begin Chapter 11: Measurement.  We will start this chapter by measuring capacity (liter and milliliter) and mass (gram and kilogram). 

Science: This week we will begin Chapter 8: Matter.  We will focus on the three states of matter and how water changes states.

*In order to cover all of the important math chapters before the MAP test, for the next few weeks spelling will be put on hold.  We are going to take our normal spelling time to do some extra math work.  This week and next week, we will take this time to focus on the multiple types of graphs.  We will learn the possible ways to record data and how to interpret that data.  Once we have learned the multiple types of graphs, we will take all that we know and put this to use in a graphing project.  Students will choose a question and survey the class.  They will then create a poster that displays the results using each graph we have learned!
